Butterfly valves have a device to stop or regulate the flow of a fluid in a pipe, in which a swivelling disc, known as butterfly, increases or reduces the passage section. When the flow area is decreased, the local pressure loss in the valve increases, thus reducing the flow.
Butterfly valves used in air ducts, pipes for all types of fluids and in mechanical applications, such as some types of heat motors.
In hydraulics, butterfly valves are distinguished by the following characteristics:
- they are always contained inside pipes;
- low pressure drop when fully open;
- the relationship between flow area and the swivel angle of the butterfly is not linea.
