Check valves prevent the flow of liquid in a certain direction with no return. When the flow direction is correct, the valve remains open, but closes when pressure or velocity decreases, preventing the return of the flow. The difference in pressure between inlet and outlet keeps the valve open or closed.
Check valves (also known as no-return uni-flow, check or uni-directional valves) are used to maintain the pressure in a pipe in service and to discharge. The fluid flow is directed freely from the inlet to the use inlet, whereas the opposite direction is blocked. Check valves are commonly used in pipes connected to pumping systems to prevent water hammers, mainly in the pump discharge line.
